First Dental Examination

How Should We Prepare for the First Dental Examination?

It is important to prepare in advance so that children’s first dental experience is a positive one. After the first teeth erupt in infancy, it is generally recommended to have the first dental examination between 6 months and 1 year of age. It will be useful to consider the following points for children to meet the dentist in the future:

Preparation and Education: For children, preparing for a dental visit can include watching videos and animations about dentists, reading books about dentists, and doing activities at home such as counting teeth. Such preparations can make children more comfortable and eager for the examination.

Appointment Time When making an appointment, choosing times when the child is more alert and pleasant can increase cooperation. Going for an examination when children are tired or hungry can increase the risk of a negative experience.

Parental Attitude: Parents should avoid behaviors that reflect their own anxiety on their children. It is important that they show a motivating and positive attitude rather than sharing their negative experiences. However, they should understand that conditions requiring treatment may not always be resolved at the first appointment and should not put pressure on the child.

Avoiding Threatening Behavior: Threatening children with going to the dentist or getting an injection can increase prejudice and anxiety. Such behavior can trigger a child’s fear of the dentist and make the examination process more difficult.

When Should I Have My Baby’s First Dental Examination?

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommend a first dental visit after the first tooth erupts, usually between 6 months and 1 year of age.

Is One Year Too Early for an Examination?

The primary goal of pediatric dentists is to protect children from tooth decay. During the first examination at an early age, parents are shown what to do to prevent your baby’s teeth from decaying and regular check-ups are performed. These examinations are an important step in monitoring your child’s dental health and taking preventive measures. Therefore, the one-year-old check-up is very valuable for your baby’s dental health.
