Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment involves removing damaged or infected pulp from inside the tooth, cleaning and refilling the tooth. Modern techniques have made this procedure generally painless and comfortable. The aim of root canal treatment is to save the tooth and preserve the health of the surrounding bone tissues. The treatment usually takes 45 minutes and the lack of pain reduces the tendency of patients to postpone the treatment process. When treatment is delayed, the risk of infection increases, which can lead to bone and tooth loss.

Root canal treatment involves removing the soft tissue in the inner part of the tooth, called the pulp, and disinfecting and refilling the tooth. The pulp is a region of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that extends to the root of the tooth. If the pulp becomes infected, bacteria multiply and this infection can cause serious health problems. Left untreated, the infection can lead to the loss of the tooth and surrounding bone tissues. Therefore, root canal treatment is performed to protect the tooth.

Root canal treatment is usually performed in cases of deep decay, tooth cracks or severe pain. In addition, symptoms such as sore gums, swelling of the tooth or radiating toothache may also require root canal treatment. By saving the tooth, this treatment helps to preserve the bone structure of the tooth and allows the tooth to function in a healthy way.

The root canal treatment process involves several steps. First, the dentist takes x-rays to assess the internal structure of the tooth and determine whether treatment is needed. If necessary, local anesthesia is applied and the procedure is started. Then, the pulp is carefully removed and the root canals are cleaned. One session of root canal treatment usually takes about 45 minutes. Afterwards, the inside of the tooth is filled with a permanent material. If necessary, a temporary filling can be made and the permanent filling will be placed in the next session.

After root canal treatment, some points should be taken into consideration. The treated tooth may experience mild sensitivity, which can usually be managed with painkillers. Also, care should be taken not to eat for at least three hours after treatment. To maintain dental health, consumption of sugary foods should be reduced, teeth should be cleaned regularly and dental examinations should be performed at least twice a year. Root canal treatment has a high success rate and with regular care, the treated tooth can be used for a lifetime.
