Removable dentures are a treatment option for patients with partial edentulism or complete edentulism where bridges and implants are not preferred. These are prostheses that can be inserted and removed from the oral cavity and are used to replace missing teeth. Removable dentures are supported by the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity.

Types of Removable Prosthesis

The types of removable dentures vary according to the number of teeth lost, the area and the material used. In general, there are five main types:

1. Total Prostheses

These are prostheses used when there are no teeth left in the mouth. They are produced with support from the upper and lower jawbone and are usually made of plastic material. These removable prostheses provide comfort to the person, but may change color over time.

2. Partial Dentures

They are prostheses applied to mouths where some of the natural teeth are present. They are usually made of acrylic or cast material. These prostheses, which are attached to the main teeth, may not be aesthetically pleasing due to their wire appearance.

3. Precision Attached Prostheses

It is used when more than one tooth is missing and is supported by the natural teeth remaining in the mouth. Porcelain crowns are hookless prostheses that are attached to the tooth by means of small retaining apparatus hidden inside.

4. Immediatric Prostheses

Used when all the main teeth need to be extracted. They are temporary healing prostheses that are fitted as soon as the teeth are extracted. When healing is complete, the patient’s permanent dentures are made.

5. Overdentures

They are prostheses created by providing retention on several natural teeth or roots present in the mouth.
